Hayden stood with his head down.
Hayden
I was careless.
Amros
You were. However, you did not know what this Cameron child was capable of.
Hayden
All the more reason not to have acted on sheer ignorance.
Amros
You can’t blame yourself entirely, friend. Arkain and Suri’s death cannot be held on your shoulders forever.
Hayden
I just can’t bear it, Amros. The hope for this world and my daughter, killed.
Amros
Loss has to be seen as normal, Hayden. You should know this by now.
Hayden
The boy, Cameron, he is mine. I will own his skull in the near future.
Amros
As you wish.
Merdos ran through the wall in panic.
Merdos
My lords, Gemma has escaped.
The burnt down church was completely surrounded by cops and a few firemen. The scene was being scoped for evidence and bodies.
Officer 1
This is so weird, only body we found was of a priest.
Officer 2
Why is that weird?
Officer 1
He had a bullet lodged in his head.
Officer 2
Interesting. Maybe he had it coming?
Officer 1
What he do? Commit a sin so horrible a bullet fell from the sky and landed in his head?
Officer 2
I don’t know, just a thought.
Officer 1
Couldn’t have been a robbery. I mean come on, who the hell robs a church?
Officer 2
Maybe it wasn’t robbed. Maybe some guy came in and just blew the place up.They laughed.
Officer 2
You think it’s wrong that we’re laughing right now?
Officer 1
Honestly, after seeing what happened to this church, I don’t think I know what’s wrong anymore.
Officer 2
What’s that?
In the middle of where the church was stood Gemma, her red coat glimmering in the sun.
Officer 1
Girl, come here.
Gemma did not move.
Gemma
Arkain!
Officer 2
She looks like one of those kids from that high school who’s missing.
Officer 1
She could be.
The officers walked forward.
Gemma
Arkain!
Officer 1
Excuse me, kid?
Gemma
You made me a promise. You can’t break it.
Officer 2
Hey!
Tears were falling down Gemma’s face.
Gemma
You can’t be dead, you can’t.
She fell to her knees.
Officer 1
I think she’s the blind one.
Officer 2
Gemmy? Was that her name?
Officer 1
Something like that. Alright, let’s haul her in.
Gemma
Arkain, I’m still here, I’m still alive. Where are you?
The officers grabbed her.
Gemma
Leave me alone! Leave me alone! Arkain!
They took her and put her into the back seat of the car.
Gemma
ARKAIN!
She sat in the car.
Gemma
I’m alone, again.
She cried like she did when she was young.
Doctor
Mrs. Lee, it’s a girl.
She held the baby girl in her hands with her husband next to her.
Nurse
Can I have the name you’d like for her?
Mrs. Lee began to cry.
Mrs. Lee
Gemma, Gemma Rose Lee.
Mrs. Lee
She doesn’t cry, it’s amazing. I have not lost any sleep at all.
Friend
I wish my kid wouldn’t, he never shuts up.
Mrs. Lee
Did I ever tell you what her first word was?
Friend
No, what?
Mrs. Lee
Cry!
Friend
Really, why?
Mrs. Lee
We were watching a movie called Her Only Sin and I was crying because the little girls parents died in it, and she turned an looked up at me and said it.
Friend
That’s crazy. My son’s first word was bastard. Not my fault his father's a lowlife bastard.
13 years ago.....
Gemma sat down with her mother waiting for the eye doctor.
Gemma
Mommy, I'm scared.
Mrs. Lee
It's okay baby, no matter what, it will be fine.
Gemma
I know mommy. I just always want to be able to see you.
Mrs. Lee
Right now, take a picture of my face with your eyes, and engrave it in your heart. You'll always see me, you'll never be alone.
She kissed Gemma on the forehead.
Gemma
Smile, mommy.
Mrs. Lee smiled. The Eye doctor came out seconds later giving the news that Gemma was going blind.
Room full of people shouted happy birthday!
Mrs. Lee
Now make a wish!Six year old Gemma thinks and blows out candles.
Mrs. Lee
What did you wish for baby?
Gemma
If I told you, it wouldn’t come true, mommy.
Mrs. Lee
I hope it comes true.
She kissed Gemma on the forehead.
Police officers knocked on the Lee household and the babysitter opened the door and called Gemma down.
Officer
Gemma, your parents got into a car accident.
Gemma
No! They went to go eat. They’ll be back later.
Officer
Gemma, I need to take you to your grandma’s.
Gemma
Leave me alone! Leave me alone! Mommy, daddy!
He put her into the car.
Gemma
Mommy!
Her only wish she ever made while blowing out her birthday candles was to never be alone.
Gemma
He said they’d die, he said I’d only have him in the end.
Officer
What you say back there? What did he say?
Gemma
Nothing.
With the loss of all she knew,
Gemma
You will be my only sin, my only real sin.
she gave birth to a monster.

Chapter Fourteen: Good Men Die Like the Rest
Velis and Cameron walked in the Roger’s Pub. Roger saw Velis and began nervously cleaning.
Velis
Alright, I need everyone out.
The ten guys inside all looked around to her.
Velis
You can leave with your lives, or stay here with your dead body.
Random guy
We suppose to be scared of you?
Velis dropped her coat and was wearing an all black suit.
Velis
Yes.
Cameron walked forward.
Cameron
Please gentlemen, there is a simple solution. We have yet to fight anyone since last night and we do not wish to kill humans at the moment.
Random guy
Humans? What are you, aliens?
Every man in the room laughed.Velis moved forward quickly without anyone even noticing, her foot hit the bottom of the man's hand and his cup flew up. Her foot then swept him off his feet and his head fell where the cup would land. As the cup fell down, Velis grabbed the cup in midair and smashed it into the man’s face.
Cameron
If aliens could do that.
The other men quickly ran out of the bar. The man sat on the floor holding his face while weeping.
Velis
You should have just listened. The last guy didn't either.
She snapped his neck.
Velis
Dispose of him.
Cameron lifted his finger and the man’s body was set on fire.
Cameron
This is disgusting. You really should think before you act Velis. If I wasn’t here who would dispose of the body?
The body and fire were gone.
Velis
Roger would.
She looked over to the bar tender roger.
Velis
He did last time.
Cameron
How handy.
Roger set up two tables in the middle of the bar for them.
Roger
Anything you need Velis, just call. I'm going to go clean the back.
Velis and Cameron sat down next to each other.
Cameron
Who will be attending this?
Velis
Malic, Orthak, and Akasha.
Cameron
Why not Ximendos?
Velis
He has other things to attend to apparently.
Cameron
Figures.
The door opened and Malic walked in.
Malic
Hello, friends.
Velis
Sit down.
Malic
Wow, a little happy today Velis?
Velis
I’d say so. We killed the boy last night.
Malic sat down.
Malic
I’d sure as hell be happy. Master is going to love you.
Velis
He sure as hell better. I’m thinking about ranking up.
Malic
You quite deserve it. I don’t think there is a scarier woman in town.
Velis
Except her.
She pointed behind him.
Akasha
Well said.
She had thick long black hair and blue eyes. All she wore was a giant black coat.
Velis
How are you, Akasha?
Akasha
The boy is dead, correct?
Velis
Thanks for answering my question. Yes he is.
Cameron
Where is Orthak?
Akasha
He won’t be attending. I’ve sent him on a mission.
Malic
Good, I hate when I’m around him, gives me the chills.
Velis
He’s on your team.
Malic
I know. I didn’t say I’m afraid of him, I just said he gives me the chills.
Cameron
He is fear in shapes, after all.
Akasha
Speaking of missions. I have a new one for you three.
Malic
Yes! I was waiting.
Akasha
Ximendos and I have decided we must get rid of Merdos and Masato. Their powers can prove to be of an annoyance should we continue to allow them to interfere with our plans.
Cameron
And this task belongs to?
Malic
Can I? I would love to finish the job.
Akasha
Yes, you can. Careful young Malic, you know fully well a touch by either of those two can prove fatal. The setting will be up to your desire young one, but the time will be tomorrow. Those two are always first on the scene, so it should not be a problem. Even with the boy and those two out of the way the threat of The White Coats is still strong. As long as Amros and Hayden are present, they will remain a force we must remain weary of.
Velis
I’ll kill Hayden.
Akasha
We do not need suicide missions, Velis.
Velis crossed her arms and sat back.
Velis
Someone has to do it.
Akasha
Someone will, soon. Velis, you will be a part of the president assassination.
Malic
Sounds interesting.
Akasha
It is. Amya of the human ranks is under the impression that she has a week to prepare for us to attack. Should we give her that week, things may prove to be tricky. For that reason, tomorrow will be the day.
Malic
You know, I do like this president.
Cameron
He is a good man.
Velis
And good men must die like the rest.
Akasha
Do not think this will be easy. There will be many guards, there will be army, there will be Amya's people. You are bullet proof Malic, but young Velis here is not.
Velis
No one will hit me, believe it.
Akasha
I do, your speed matches the speed of my power.
Velis smiled.
Akasha
Cameron, you aren’t as insightful and enlightening today like on other days, anything wrong?
Cameron
Nothing, just a lot on my mind.
Akasha
Clear it, it will only slow you down.
Akasha quickly got up and lifted her hand. A thin blue line of lighting pulsed through the room and hit something by the hallway to the restrooms. There was a thud and a clatter. Velis stood up.
Velis
That was Roger!
Akasha sat down.
Akasha
Sit down.
Velis
Do you know how hard it is to find good human help these days?
Akasha
They're all dogs, and like dogs, they all lack the intelligence to further our organization and our agenda.
Velis sat down angry.
Akasha
Well then. I think this meeting is complete. You have your missions. Also, congratulations on killing the boy, Ximendos will be most pleased.
Velis
Thank you.
Cameron did not respond to the congratulation. Akasha left.
Velis
Let's go, now that Roger is dead this place lacks interest. Burn it to the ground.
Cameron
As you wish.
Gemma sat in the middle of her white cell.
Gemma
I'm wide awake, and it's morning.
It’s time.
Gemma
I can’t feel Arkain. I can’t breath.
They killed him, the dark ones.Gemma
We must leave, Krysin.
We shall. Nothing can contain us.
Gemma
Nothing can. Now devour me.
Velis
Alright, I need everyone out.

Chapter Thirteen: Hope Died Along Time Ago
4 years ago…..
Fifteen year old Cameron sat next to his mother on a bench waiting for the bus. They were both going to pick up his little brother from school. His mother Carmen sat on the bench next to him smoking a cigarette.
Carmen
Fucking bus is always late. Your brother gets out in ten minutes. God damn.
She took the cigarette out of her mouth and put her hand down close to Cameron.
Cameron
You almost burnt me.
She looked at him.
Carmen
Shut up, quit your bitching, you act like it will hurt that bad.
She tapped the tip of the cigarette on the back of her other hand.
Carmen
Zing burn bam done no more pain.
She put it back in her mouth. Just as she blew smoke out a lady in a business suit walked by and looked straight down at Cameron.
Lady
Excuse me but have you ever thought about getting your son into modeling or acting?
Carmen
You ever thought about not talking to people who don’t care to hear you?
Lady
I’m sorry lady, but your son is beautiful. He could make you a lot of money. I’ve never seen such a child.
Carmen
You think I care about money? It all burns like my cigarette, and like my cigarette, it only brings me pleasure for a short amount of time.
Lady
What’s your name, kid?
Cameron
My name is Cameron.
Lady
You got a last name?
Cameron
I prefer not to tell you.
Lady
It’s okay, many famous people only go by their first names.
Cameron looked up at the lady and smiled. The bus stopped at the stop just after his lips widened.
Carmen
Let’s go, get the hell on.
Cameron got on and his mother turned to the lady.
Carmen
Thanks lady, but we’re not interested. Now go try and scam someone else. My son is beautiful, but he will never sell his face as a Hollywood whore.
She got on the bus. The bus drove until they got to the school. When they stopped, people got on, people got off. One of the people to get on was Cameron’s eight year old little brother Christian. Christian looked exactly like Cameron, except smaller because of his age. Christian walked up to his mother and she kissed him on both cheeks.
Carmen
How was school baby?
Christian
Fine, mom.
Carmen
Mommy, you call me mommy.
Christian
Yes, mommy.
He sat next to Cameron.
Christian
Hey, my friends asked about you at school today.
Cameron
Cool.
Christian
They all think you’re cute. They say I’m just as cute, but they like older boys.
They both laughed.
Cameron
Tell them, I don’t date kids.
Carmen
You don’t date anyone, you hear me? No one, no little whore is going to be messing with my sons.
They laughed.
Cameron
Don’t worry, one day you’ll find a girl who likes you. She won’t be that thing mom calls them, she’ll be special. Like you.
Christian
I’m not special.
Cameron
Yes you are. Don’t ever forget that.
Christian
Whatever.
Their mom turned to them.
Carmen
Enough, you two talk too much.
The bus came to their stop and they got off and began to walk the short distance left to their house.
Christian
Mommy, can you make us dinner tonight?
Carmen
No, your brother's going to order you a pizza, and that’s it.
Cameron
I don’t want pizza.
Carmen
I didn’t ask you. Mommy’s going to go out with friends, have a good time and you’re going to take care of your brother.
Christian
It’s okay Cam, we’ll have lots of fun.
Cameron
I’m sure.
They got to the house. Cameron and Christian hung out for hours before their mom left. After dinner and some TV and drank hot chocolate. Cameron walked his brother up the stairs to go to bed.
Christian
I wish mom was different.
Cameron
Save that one for your next birthday.
Christian got into his bed and pulled the covers over him.
Christian
Do dreams come true?
Cameron
The ones you have when you’re asleep, or the ones you make for your future?
Christian
The future ones.
Cameron
Depends on how much you want it.
Christian
I want it.
Cameron
What do you want to do?
Christian
I want to be a doctor. I want to save lives.
Cameron
Well, go to school, learn, and you can be one.
Christian
What dream do you want to come true?
Cameron
I don’t really have any dreams.
Christian
Everyone has to have a dream.
Cameron
I’m not everyone.
Christian
Come on, you have to have one thing you want in life.
Cameron thought for a second.
Cameron
The only dream I want, is to be happy. Whatever I do, I’ll be happy, as long as I have my little brother around with me during it all.
Christian
I like your dream!
Cameron patted his little brother on the head.
Cameron
I bet you do.
Christian
If I die, does my dream die, too? Does yours die, too?
Cameron was caught off guard by this question.
Cameron
Well, I’ve learned that everything burns, and everything will die, but only dreams will always revive. You don’t need to worry though, you’ll be an amazing doctor one day and I’ll always be happy.
Christian
I love you, Cameron.
Cameron kissed his brother on the forehead.
Cameron
I love you too, Christian, and I love no one more than my little brother.
Christian closed his eyes. Cameron turned off the lights and was about to walk out.
Christian
Wait, I changed my dream!
Cameron
Go to sleep Christian.
Christian
My dream is for you to always be happy, no matter what.
Cameron
I will. Now go to sleep.
He shut the door. He smelt gasoline in the air. He couldn't recall if he turned the stove off after they made hot chocolate.
Cameron
How did the gas get turned on?
As he was walking down stairs he heard the door open.
Carmen
Thanks girls, I’ll see you tomorrow!
She closed the door.
Cameron
You’re home late.
She smacked his face.
Carmen
Shut up. Mommy had lots of fun tonight.
Cameron
I’m glad.
She walked towards the stairs.
Carmen
Where’s your brother?
Cameron
He’s in bed.
Carmen
Good boy. If you don’t love me, if you don’t love the world, I know there is no one more you love than your brother.
Cameron
He’s the only one I see hope in.
She started walking up the stairs. Cameron started to walk to the kitchen.
Carmen
I don’t care if you don’t like it in the house, but I need a smoke.
Cameron’s only thought before he realized what she said was without Christian, he just could not fathom a life of happiness. As those thoughts carved themselves into his head, the house was consumed by an explosion.
Present time....
Cameron looked down at the pile of burning wood of the church. He wasn’t there completely, wasn’t living in the same time the air hit his face, all he could really see, was his little brothers face. One tear ran down his cheek.
Velis
Are you okay, Cameron?
Cameron
I’m fine, just reminiscing.
Velis
About?
Cameron
Nothing, nothing at all.
Velis
Well then, you killed the boy.
Cameron
Yes.
They watched the smoke go up into the sky, and as they heard sirens approaching, they decided it was time to go.
Velis
Let’s go, we have to tell master their hope is dead.
Cameron still lost in the smoke meeting the black sky mumbled.
Cameron
Hope died along time ago.
Fifteen year old Cameron sat next to his mother on a bench waiting for the bus. They were both going to pick up his little brother from school. His mother Carmen sat on the bench next to him smoking a cigarette.

Chapter Twelve: Killing Time Again
The roof above Arkain and Suri cracked and they both jumped forward.
Velis
What now?
Hayden fell through the hole on the ceiling and onto the ground where Arkain and Suri had just stood.
Cameron
This is most unexpected.
Hayden stood up straight and dusted himself off. Suri and Arkain stood not to far from him.
Cameron
What a lovely entrance. Your reputation precedes you, Master Hayden.
Velis
Don’t call him master, he is nothing.
Cameron
Quiet Velis, before he kills you.
Velis stood quiet.
Hayden
Who would you be boy?
Cameron
Cameron of the Regime, 2nd rank.
Hayden
A last name?
Cameron
That I do not wish to divulge to you.
Hayden
You know who I am?
Cameron
Everyone in the Regime does. One of the three we are told to fear if ever we face.
Velis
I don’t run from anyone!
Cameron
Quiet Velis.
Velis
I’ll fight him.
Cameron
He will kill you.
Velis
I don’t care.
Hayden turned towards her.
Cameron
I do.
Hayden
You wish to fight me?
Velis smiled.
Velis
I know if I do I will die, but I don’t care. Even the ants do not run from the scorpion.
Hayden
Come.
Hayden walked forward.
Cameron
Stop!
Hayden stopped.
Cameron
You are at a checkmate here, Hayden. You can kill Velis, but I will have killed both the boy and girl before you accomplished that.
Hayden
I don’t think you can do that.
Cameron
Why don’t you try me?
Suri
He’s not bluffing father.
Hayden stared at Cameron for a minute in silence.
Hayden
You let them go, and we shall fight.
Cameron
Time is no longer on your side.
They all turned to where Velis was standing to see she was gone.
Cameron
Fear, only what is necessary to fear.
The entire building blew up.
Gemma
You think I’m a fool, sir?
Amros stood in the white room with Gemma while she sat on the floor and he stood.
Amros
Never.
Gemma
So why did you do it?
Amros turned the other way.
Amros
We seen no other choice.
Gemma
There is always another choice. You just felt this one was simple.
Amros
Please Gemma, please understand our reasons. The fate of our world rests upon this.
Gemma
Reasons understood. Understanding isn’t the problem. Your intelligence far exceeds my own sir, why do you act like you do not feel what I feel?
Amros
There are complications, Gemma. If Arkain knew, he would not want to be here. You know this.
Gemma
I’d rather him want to kill me, than know he’s out there fighting on a lie.
Amros
In the end, he’s fighting for good, and that you should see as a justification.
Gemma
He will find out Amros. Not today, but he will. What then?
Amros
I do not know.
Gemma
You will tell him he’s been living motivated by a lie?
Amros
We will think of something, naturally.
Gemma
I won’t ever forgive myself, I won’t ever forgive myself for killing her.
Gemma put her face in her hands.
Amros
I’m sorry, Gemma.
Amros walked out of the room.
Gemma
I am a murderer.
You are a monster. It's killing time again.
Velis
What now?

Chapter Eleven: The Sons of God and Satan
Velis ran forward to Arkain and ducked under his swinging fist, spun her leg under his feet and Arkain fell to the ground. Velis smashed her heel into his face.
Amya
If I haven’t seen anything, then I believe you are still full of many surprises.
Velis jumped up and flipped back. Arkain tried to get to his feet. Her foot connected with his hand and her fist with his face. Arkain tumbled into the pews, knocking many down with his giant wings.
Nicholas
It all depends on how you look at things. I have a feeling things have already begun. The first battle of the new war of existence, and we’re here conversing about it.
Velis pulled out her silver pistol and shot at Arkain’s chest. His right wing arched in front of him and the bullet was deflected. Velis, surprised by this, tossed her gun aside. Arkain, surprised by this, realized these could be a shield.
Amya
I’m sure it already has begun. The question is, when will they come for you?
She ran forward between where Arkain was on the floor and swung her leg up, then down onto Arkain’s wing. Arkain kicked her between the legs then under her chin and Velis was sent backwards.
Nicholas
Let them come. The army of the human race will be waiting for them.
Arkain, knowing he isn’t a skilled fighter, ran forward while she was on the ground to take advantage of this. Her leg came under his feet again. As he hit the ground he extended his right wing and it pushed her across the floor.
Amya
I’m sure they will be. The entire human race will be in this war, not only us of higher power.
Velis rolled onto her knees and jumped up. Arkain was getting to his knees when he felt her foot on his knee and her other foot connect with his neck. He fell back unable to breath and in pain from the blow. She grabbed his foot and pulled him her way, to this Arkain extended both his wings forward and they hit her both in the face and she fell onto her back.
Nicholas
Did you think it would only be you guys? The ultimate battle of good versus evil, without human interference or say? We’ve faced monsters before, the human kind of course, but all the same.
Arkain grabbed her by the hair and picked her up, thinking about how he always told himself he’d never touch a woman’s hair. He hit her in the stomach. She bent forward, kneed her in the face, grabbed her head again, and turned around, bent down, pulled his wings back, and extended them into her.
Nicholas
Against even the ones who could thrust us into extinction, we will fight.
Velis got up slowly wiping blood from her nose.
Velis
Is that it?
Arkain walked forward.
Velis
For one thing I’ll tell you, you’re more fun than your step father. He only pleaded and cried.
Arkain ran across kicked his foot out only to have her push it down. She hit him in the neck, then his left side of his ribs, and then the right of his head she planted her foot. Arkain fell to the ground.
Velis
Come on, get up.
Arkain slowly began to get up, not knowing how much more he could take.
Velis
Almost out of gas, I see.
She ran forward and pushed her knee into the side of his head, he fell to the floor.
Velis
Now Arkain, I thought for a second you’d be smarter than you are. Thought you’d never leave the safe zone of the White Coats.
She walked over him.
Velis
I never actually thought I’d get you alone.
He turned his face from the ground, and spat blood in her face.
Arkain
Did you really think I’d come alone?
Before Velis could answer, two hands appeared on her shoulder and threw her backwards across the entire church where she landed next to father bob’s body. She looked over to his dead body.
Velis
Ew.
Suri stood next to Arkain.
Suri
I waited like you asked.
Arkain
Thanks.
She helped him to his feet. Velis got to hers as well.
Velis
Well, I guess he was right, you did have a plan.
She wiped dust off her.
Velis
I don’t know if I’m surprised or happy. Cameron said you’d probably come alone if we were unlucky, but if we were lucky, you’d bring a friend.
Arkain
Who’s Cameron?
The voice came from behind Arkain and Suri.
Cameron
That would be me.
Cameron looked almost identical to Arkain, except his eyes were blue and his black hair was perfectly curved around his face. His skin was pale and he was just as tall as Arkain and wore just a black overcoat.
Cameron
I was hoping you’d bring a friend.
Arkain turned towards Cameron while Suri kept her eyes on Velis.
Arkain
Who are you?
Cameron
I thought it was clear, I’m Cameron. Were you under the impression that Velis was the only member of the Shadow Regime?
Arkain
Not really.
Cameron
Well, I am a 2nd rank member.
Arkain
I don’t care.
Cameron
You should. Your friend Velis is a 3rd rank.
Suri
You seem too young to be a part of this regime. How old are you?
Cameron
What an odd question in the midst of battle, I am nineteen.
Velis
He’s one of our newest members.
Cameron lifted his hand out to Arkain.
Cameron
I will set this world on fire, and you will watch.
A tiny fire appeared in the hand of Cameron.
Arkain
Fire? You think you can defeat us all with fire? The wind from my wings will erase your flames, kid.
Cameron
You’re foolish Arkain.
Each painted glass window on the church erupted as explosions appeared and destroyed them all.
Cameron
I will destroy all you know, all you love.
Arkain
You wouldn’t be the first.
Cameron
I’m content with last place.
Suri
We have to wait for backup, we weren’t expecting this.
Arkain
Lets hope they get here in time.
Arkain and Suri began to mentally prep themselves for their first large scale battle.
Cameron
The son of God, will burn by the son of his opposing force.
Amya
If I haven’t seen anything, then I believe you are still full of many surprises.
Velis jumped up and flipped back. Arkain tried to get to his feet. Her foot connected with his hand and her fist with his face. Arkain tumbled into the pews, knocking many down with his giant wings.

Chapter Ten: The Stuff of Legends
Velis stood at the door steps of the West house on the phone.
Velis
No Malic, no ones here. I’m about to leave.
She leaned against the wall.
Velis
Now all he is going to have of his old life is memories.
She laughed.
Velis
If he takes the bait we gave him, which he will, I will find him.
She walked towards her car.
Velis
I’ll wait for you here.
She got into the car.
Velis
Everything goes as planned.
She put the key into the ignition and turned.
Velis
What the hell?
It did not start, didn’t even make a sound.
Velis
Well, this is some bullshit.
The car shook and as something landed on the hood of the car.
Velis
What the hell?
There was a loud growl. Velis saw a white tiger.
Velis
Hello, Masato.
She picked up her gun and began to shoot through the windshield. The glass was all broken. The tiger was gone.
Velis
Dead, already?
The right window on the backseat caved in and all she saw was orange came through.
Velis
Shit!
She kicked her door open and began to run towards the house.
Velis
Have to get in the house-
The tigers got her from the back and from the legs and they pulled her down. Before they were able to sink their teeth they were lifted and throw away from her.
Malic
Now come on kitties, let’s be nice.
Malic stood by the car, black, shaved head, and no shirt and black pants on, with two silver cords flowing behind his back. Velis got up and so did the tigers.
Velis
Thanks, Malic.
Malic
You owe me. These little tigers were going to eat you up.
Velis
It’s Merdos and Masato.
Malic
I figured. The form of what they are.
He walked forward.
Malic
Although she isn’t much of a lady,
He turned and nodded to hear.
Malic
Hitting a woman is just not right, at least not to me.
The two silver cords were moving from side to side. Merdos and Masato growled.
Malic
You go on ahead, I’ll be here.
Velis
Are you sure?
Malic
I’m sure. If they bite onto me, they won’t find any crimson water.
She turned towards Merdos and Masato.
Velis
See you later boys. You were close, but not close enough. That will be the last time you ever lay a hand on me.
Arkain sat in a confession booth.
Arkain
Bless me father for I have sinned, this is my first confession.
Father Bob
What sin could you have committed my son that would bring you to the chapel at this time of night?
Arkain
Not what I’ve done, but what I’ve allowed to happen.
Father Bob
I’m afraid I am confused.
Arkain
Is it a sin if someone dies because of you?
Father Bob
No, not if you were not aware of it happening.
Arkain
Yeah, that’s what they told me.
Father Bob
They? Who are they?
Arkain
No one, you wouldn’t understand.
Father Bob
Please son, do not belittle my intelligence
Arkain
I don’t mean to father, but before a day ago, I wouldn’t have understood either.
Father Bob
Are you okay, young one?
Arkain
More than okay. For the first time in my life, I feel like I’m free.
Father Bob
Will this be all for tonight?
Arkain
Father, do you believe in angels?
Father Bob
Well, of course I do, my religion leads me to believing in such things. I must admit at times it gets a little hard to believe without seeing them, but I believe by faith.
Arkain
You’d like to see one?
Father Bob
Before I died, yes.
Arkain
Seeing is believing.
Arkain walked out of the little chapel.
Father Bob
Where are you-
He saw Arkain and was dumbstruck.
Father Bob
Oh my God.
He fell to his knees on the ground. Arkain stood with his shirt off in the chapel.
Father Bob
You’re an angel.
Giant wings spread wide across the air extending from Arkain’s back.
Arkain
I have wings father, but I’m not sure I am as sinless as an angel is thought to be.Father Bob gulped.
Father Bob
This is the stuff of legends.
There was a loud crack and Father Bob fell to the ground. Arkain turned to see the father fall with a bullet in his head.
Arkain
Father!
Again, Arkain felt the feeling of someone dying because of him.
Velis
Was that your father? What a coincident, we just finished with your step father.
Arkain in his anger could not put words together.
Velis
Come on, isn’t there something heroic you want to shout out to me?
She walked a bit forward.
Velis
How dare you, I’m going to kill you?
Few steps forward.
Velis
You will regret that?
She began to laugh. Arkain did not say anything.
Velis
Nothing? Well, you’re no fun. The names Velis by the way.
She paused as if he were to reply.
Velis
You going to introduce yourself?
Arkain
Don’t act like you don’t know who I am.
He said in a low tone.
Velis
Yes, you’re right, I do. What I didn’t know was you have wings. So what, are you a bird? Giant dove maybe?
Arkain did not respond.
Velis
Well, you seriously are just no fun.
Arkain
You killed my family.
Velis
Not only them, but some other people. There was a nasty man at the bar earlier today, oh and the priest behind you. I mean, your father.
She laughed.
Arkain
You are a monster.
Velis
I wouldn’t say that. If I’m a monster, you have yet to see the ones who I consider monsters.
Arkain
Why is life so meaningless to you?
Velis
I’d give you a huge explanation if I could, but simply put, I don’t care. Life is living then dying. I’m just the one applying the dying to the many lives I could install it in.
She smiled.
Velis
I don’t have a God. At least not his.
She pointed at the priest's dead body.
Velis
I wouldn’t leave my life in the hands of a God with a plan. I make my own plans, kid. That guy by your feet, he left it to someone else, and look where that got him.
She walked a little more further.
Velis
Dead.
Arkain
I’ll be making your plans now.
Velis
Oh really? You’re going to kill me? Do you know what it’s like to kill? Do you, kid?
She smiled.
Velis
I mean, a dog trained as a human pet can bark, holler, and growl all it wants, but do you think it could really kill? I don’t think so.
Arkain
I’m no dog.
Velis
You want to hurt me boy? So then do it if you’re so powerful.
Arkain didn’t move.
Velis
No, I didn’t think so. You see, all you dogs love to bark at strangers, but when it comes down to it, you’re a tad bit to afraid to actually bite. But like you said, you’re no dog, and I’m no mailman. You’ve entered a realm where wolves eat sheep, Your just a sheep little Arkain. You can be one to be slaughtered, or one to be herded.
Arkain
Shut up! I'm tired of hearing you talk.
She giggled.
Velis
Well, looks like you’d like to be slaughtered instead of coming with me.
Arkain’s wings widened in the air.
Arkain
Neither of those is an option now.
He lifted his hand in the air open as if waiting to grab something.
Arkain
Are you ready to die?
A giant sword appeared in the hand of Arkain out of nowhere. He didn't know where it came from. In the moment, he decided he'd use it.
Velis
Always.
She smiled.
Velis
Let’s see if the Angel of God, is truly as all powerful as they say he is to be.
Amya got up from her chair after the long meeting with Romberg.
Amya
I must leave now.
Romberg
Yes, let me get the door for you.
He got up and walked to the door and grabbed the handle.
Romberg
You know, I think I’m going to hold on to my hope and stay strong.
Amya
A sudden change in your attitude Nicholas, why so?
Romberg
I don’t know. I had a little mental hit right now.
Amya
What hit you?
Romberg
I don’t know for sure, but it feels like I have a guardian angel. I know it sounds a bit silly, but it was just a feeling.
Amya
I wouldn’t call it silly. The stuff of legends aren’t only kids stories, and you should know that by now.
Romberg
Well then, in that case, the age of the angel is upon us.
Amya
You are quite the unique human, Nicholas. I was beginning to lose my faith in the ability of humans to prove me wrong.
Romberg
I’m not afraid to die anymore.
Amya
That’s most pleasing. I hope your guardian angel gets to meet you some day, Nicholas,
She turned to him as he was opening the door and she was walking out.
Amya
What was your middle name again?
Romberg
Selarom.
Amya
Selarom?
Romberg
It’s different, like me.
Amya
Nicholas Selarom Romberg, you will lead the race of man into the darkness, and you must be strong,
She walked out completely.
Amya
You will, right?
Arkain in front of Velis spoke at the same time.
Arkain and Nicholas
You haven’t seen anything yet.
Chapter Nine: The Greater Good
Romberg
I get this feeling Amya, that we don’t have any time.
Amya
Your feeling could be correct. We do not know how fast they'll move.
Romberg
It’s odd though.
Amya
What is?
He sat in his chair.
Romberg
I got this position, based on hope. Hope that I could change this world. Now I just think I didn’t really change anything.
Amya
Please Nicholas, do not belittle your accomplishments. The powers upon you are nothing any normal human could comprehend.
Romberg
Everything just seems so lost now.
Amya
The lost can always be found, my friend. You will be moved onto a secret base where things will be a little less complicated.
He put his hands on his face.
Romberg
The days will get black from now on. Hands won’t even be visible in front of their master’s face.
Amya
With the darkest night, comes the brightest day.
Romberg
When the day does come, when we see a brighter day,
He looked her straight in the eyes.
Romberg
Just how bright will that day be?
Amya
I do not know.
Arkain fell to his knees and began to weep. Hayden walked into the cube.
Hayden
Arkain, your mother isn’t missing.
He looked up at Hayden, eyes of helplessness.
Arkain
Dead?
He looked back down.
Arkain
This can’t be happening. This is to much, how can this happen! It’s only been a day, not even, just hours. Mom, mom, this can’t be. This is a joke, right?
He looked to Hayden, then Gemma.
Arkain
What the fuck please, please wake me up from this nightmare. They didn’t want this. They just wanted to live a normal life. If there is a God, why them? Why mom?
He was looking at the ceiling.
Arkain
Is this a part of your fucking plan?
Gemma got down next to him and wrapped her arms around him.
Arkain
This is my fault. I will get the people who did this to them. So help me God, in your name I will kill them.He stopped talking for a minute.
Arkain
Mom, I love you.
It was silent as Arkain silently wept.
Gemma
I’m sorry.
Arkain
Don’t be, it’s my fault.
Hayden
You are not at fault Arkain. It is out of your hands. You cannot control the fate of others.
Arkain stood up.
Arkain
I need to go.
Hayden
Arkain, please reconsider. They want you to act like this. They want you to go to them. It is all a part of their plan.
Arkain
I don’t fucking care!
Fallen
Arkain please understand.
Fallen appeared from the wall.
Arkain
Understand? She died because of us, all of them, because of me! I should have never of came here or dreamed of anything more than a life of ordinary! Then no one would have died! I would be at home and my mom would be happy.
Fallen
You have done nothing wrong. You must understand people will die in this war. Good, bad, guilty, and innocent. That is what we are sacrificing in order to clear the cloud of darkness that will cover these lands! We stand on one side and them on the other with the human race between us. Some will fall in the crossfire, you must accept this.
Arkain
What makes us any different? They kill, and we allow it to happen, with a weak ass justification! Sacrifices? No, I call it being cowards! Allowing people to die for our own agenda!
Hayden
Cowards? Arkain, we can’t save everyone. This agenda you say we are cowardly enough to let people die for is not only for us, it is for the prosperity of the human race.
Gemma
Calm down Arkain, you can’t go to them. Do you want to die?
Arkain
My mom didn’t want to die!
Arkain was turned towards everyone. His face was wet from crying. Suri walked in.
Suri
I don’t think anyone does.
He turned to her, surprised by her arrival.
Suri
I know what you’re thinking, how would she know, and honestly I don’t, but I don’t need to fall off a cliff to know it would hurt. Can’t you see, this is them striking at your heart, your knees! Are you simply going to allow yourself to fall like this?
Arkain
But it’s not that easy!
Fallen
No one said it would be easy; nothing forward from this will be easy. Our goal isn’t easy so neither are the sacrifices. No matter what we must accomplish what has begun. You must endure Arkain, and we will conquer. You can’t be strong if you would go seeking a killer stronger then you are at the moment. Can’t you at least be happy that your mom died for something important?
Arkain
And what is that?
Hayden
The greater good.
Arkain
I can’t even think straight.
Hayden
The decision is yours Arkain. We will not hold you against your will.
I get this feeling Amya, that we don’t have any time.
Amya
Your feeling could be correct. We do not know how fast they'll move.

Chapter Eight: The Promise
Gemma sat in the white cube looking up at the ceiling.
Gemma
I want to talk to Arkain.
Hayden’s voice came out of the walls.
Hayden
I’m afraid I cannot permit that.
Gemma
Yes you can. Please, I only wish to speak to him briefly.
Hayden took some time to respond.
Hayden
Fine. Only because we do not want you to think you are a prisoner.
Suri sat with Arkain across the table.
Suri
So, your mom, she probably misses you.
Arkain
Yeah, I’m kind of mad because she probably thinks I ran away or something.
Suri
That’s not good. If only you were in jail instead of here, at least you’d get one call.
Arkain
Yeah. I just want her to know I’m alright.
She couldn't take her eyes off of him.
Suri
So you’re close to your mom?
Arkain
You can say that. We’ve had our ups and downs like everyone does, but I love her. She means the world to me, I don’t know what I’d do if anything happened to her.
Suri
What about your dad?
Arkain
I don’t know my dad. I do have a step dad named Philmore. He’s a good guy, loves my mom so I am fine with their marriage.
Suri
Your dad left you?
Arkain
I don’t know, my mom never really told me, she just said he couldn’t stay. I can’t say if he left because of me, or if he had another good reason.
Suri
What reason would justify abandoning a child?
Arkain
I don’t know, but I’m sure he has one. Sometimes it feels like he’s watching me. I don’t know how, but it feels like it. I always get an odd sensation on the back of my neck. I turn to see if someone is behind or above me, and nothing.
He touched the back of his neck.
Suri
Maybe he is watching.
Arkain
I’m sure he’s not dead.
Suri
I didn’t mean it like that. Just maybe he is watching, like you said, you don’t know, so don’t cross out the possibility.
Arkain
You’re right. Change of subject, before I get all emotional.
Suri
Last thing we need is a tear fest.
They laughed as Hayden walked in.
Suri
Father, Arkain and I were just getting to know each other.
They stood up.
Hayden
That is fine.
Arkain
How are you, sir?
Hayden
I was well when we last spoke, and I am well now.
Arkain
Yes, sir.
Suri
Father, Arkain would really like to speak to his mother.
Hayden
Arkain, Gemma wishes to speak in your presence.
Arkain
Gemma? Where is she?
He remembered he hadn’t seen her since this all began.
Hayden
She is in a special room, I shall take you now.
Suri
Can I come?
Hayden
No, Suri, Gemma only wished for his presence.
Suri
Yes, father.
Hayden
Now, Arkain, if you will.
He gestured to the door, Arkain walked to it.
Suri
Bye, Arkain.
Gemma sat in the white cube still, making circle motions with her fingers on the floor.
Gemma
Krysin, we must get out of here.
Arkain walked into the room.
Gemma
Arkain! You came!
She got up and ran and hugged him.
Arkain
Oh, Gemma, how are you? I haven’t seen you in hours. Are you okay?
Gemma
I am fine, Arkain. No need to worry.
Arkain
I would have came earlier but I had no idea you were here.
Gemma
I don’t think anyone does other than the heads of this organization.
She walked to sit back in her corner.
Gemma
Sit, I’m sorry my cell is not more comfortable. I’d offer you a chair if I could.
Arkain
Oh Gemma, this isn’t a cell, relax.
Gemma
Isolation from peers and the world, nothing but me, I’d call this a cell, if not worse. At least cells have bars.
Arkain
It’s fine, you’ll be out of here in no time. I’ll talk to Amros about why you’re in here.
Gemma
They won’t let me out, Arkain. Even now they are monitoring our conversation. Every word and every emotion.
Arkain
Paranoid much?
Gemma
One who knows cannot be paranoid.
Arkain
I guess.
He sat down next to her.
Gemma
Arkain, I have things to tell you. Dreadful things.
Arkain
I thought so.
Gemma
Is it possible, for you to hate me?
She looked away from him.
Arkain
No, why would I ever think of doing such a thing, you’ve been nothing but nice to me.
Gemma
And so have you, to me.
He tried to grab her hand but she pulled away.
Gemma
I believe, you will hate me. If not now, someday, but I can only hope against that thought. Even if you did, I'd understand. I'd even agree with it.
Arkain
Why are you saying this?
Gemma
I’ve done something. It’s hard for me to say, but I know I must.
Arkain
Say it. I’m listening.
Gemma
The days I can feel are getting colder, the sun is no longer my friend, and the nights have never been darker.
Arkain
What does that mean? Why are you going all poet on me?
She continued.
Gemma
My mind splits itself into what I think I know, and what I know. I’m looking for the right words, but they seem to have deserted me.
Arkain did not know what to think.
Gemma
All my life, I’ve only been able to see shapes and vague impressions of faces. I’ve always led my life blind, not seeing anything truly, until now.
Arkain
What do you mean until now?
Gemma
When you walked up to me on campus,
She looked him in the face.
Gemma
I could see you. Even now, you’re glowing in my sight. Like a sun in an ocean of dark space. Arkain
What? Gemma, are you serious?
Gemma
Yes. Everything has been a blur all my life, except for now. You’re clear to me Arkain.
Arkain
Gemma, that is amazing! I don’t even know what to say.
Gemma
Happiness is always followed by darkness.
Arkain
What does that mean, Gemma?
She looked the other way again.
Gemma
Now that I can see just you, I feel I am connected to you. Like the ocean and the shore. One without the other is lost and less significant.
Arkain
What are you trying to say? Just say it.
Gemma
Arkain, Promise me no matter what I tell you, you won’t leave me.
Arkain
Gemma, no matter what you’ve done, I won’t.
Gemma
With everything going on Arkain, you’re all that makes sense right now.
Arkain smiled, Gemma looked at his face. This time desperation so clearly could be read upon it.
Gemma
Promise me you’ll always stay.
Arkain
I promise.
Gemma
Well-
Hayden voice echoed through the walls.
Hayden
Arkain, please be aware, what you’re about to see won’t be easy to comprehend.
The giant white wall now resembled a giant big screen TV, Arkain and Gemma stood in front of it. A female reporter was on the screen.
Reporter
There have been no witnesses on this incident. Everyone in the area did not see the man climb the giant oak tree here in this quiet park. Although the park was filled with members of the community, as well as children, no one saw the man jump and hang himself until it was too late and the man was already gone.
She put her hand to her ear.
Reporter
Yes sir.
She looked back at the camera.
Reporter
The man has been identified as local resident and lawyer Philmore West. Earlier today Mr. West’s wife and the entire school she worked at were reported missing. Authorities are now searching for their son as we speak by the name of Arkain West, who has also been declared missing.
The screen went black, Arkain fell to his knees.
Gemma
I want to talk to Arkain.
Hayden’s voice came out of the walls.
Hayden
I’m afraid I cannot permit that.

Chapter Seven: On a String
Arkain knocked on Suri’s door.
Suri
Come in.
He walked in.
Arkain
Hey, your door was open.
Suri
Yep, that’s why I said come in.
He walked down the hallway.
Arkain
I’m smarter then you think.
Suri
Okay, I never said you weren’t.
She walked into the kitchen and he followed.
Arkain
So.
Suri
You are just as weird as I thought you were.
Arkain
I told you-
Suri
No, no, it’s okay, I never said I didn’t like weird. Ordinary is boring.
Arkain lost himself while watching her cut carrots for dinner.
Suri
Ouch!
He came back to his senses as she cut herself with the knife. Quickly he ran over and grabbed her hand.
Arkain
Oh what happened?
Suri
I don’t know, knife slipped.
Arkain
Alrighty, let me see.
He let go of her hands and she opened her fist revealing her palm where she had just cut herself.
Arkain
I thought you said you cut yourself?
She looked down and saw her hand was not cut at all.
Suri
What? I did. Well, or at least I thought I did.
Arkain
Maybe it just didn’t cut through?
Suri
Maybe.
She finished dinner and they sat and ate.
Arkain
This is really good. Nom nom.
Suri
You’re just saying that.
Arkain
No, I mean it, I really do.
He smiled.
Suri
Thanks.
She smiled.
Arkain
No problem, gorgeous.
Suri
Oh, shut up.
Arkain
I’m just kidding, you’re not gorgeous.
Suri
How relieving. For a second there-
Arkain
You’re beautiful.
Suri
Oh, well ,Thank you.
Arkain
No, don’t tell me that, your not beautiful because I said it, you are because you are.
Suri
So cheesy I could make nachos.
Arkain
Well, do you like nachos?
Suri
Yes.
Arkain
Well then, we will be making a lot of nachos in the future. I also can do string cheese. You can call it a talent.
They laughed, this was the first time either of them has felt normal since this all began.
Suri
Thanks for coming. I needed the company.
Arkain
Well, I needed some, too.
President Nicholas Romberg sat at his desk in the oval office. In this year of 2048, the world powers are at a peace thanks to the President and his administration. After being elected sixteen years ago, he accomplished more than any of his critics thought he would. With economy thriving, wars defeated by diplomacy, and hope flowing through every nation on the earth, he has now been elected for his fourth term.
Romberg
Amya, I do not think peace will continue for much longer.
Amya sat across from him, her long blond hair flowing just past her ears, while her blue eyes glimmered in the sun that broke through the curtains on the windows.
Amya
Peace ends with dispute, and dispute is a never ending thing.
He walked to the window.
Amya
Peace is held on a string, a very thin one. The hand of a child can cut it. Never rely on it, for it can not hold you for long, nor can it hold the entire human race.
Romberg
We had such high hopes. What happened?
Amya
Humans are humans, Nicholas. The peace they all yearn for is just a mirage, and the mirage can only be viewed for so long.
Romberg
One would hope for a time they could live in that mirage.
Amya
Life is more complicated than that, why should we expect humans to be any less?
Romberg
True. If my mother could see the idealist I've become.
He opened the curtain.
Romberg
I fear there is something you want to tell me. Something more than you wish to.
She took a sip of her drink.
Amya
You’re a great man, Nicholas. Perhaps one of the best presidents I’ve ever had the chance to work with. Quite inspiring, like my days with Jefferson and Lincoln, and that I am truly grateful for. A man of your stature knows that with such high a position, comes great risk, and so, I bring you just that.
Romberg was looking out the window to the sun.
Romberg
Risk, I thought I wasn’t afraid of that word anymore.
Amya
You’ll find you never are truly unafraid of anything. Fear is a given, it’s what you do with that fear that matters.
Romberg
You always know what to say.
Amya
I’m afraid I won’t with these next words.
He turned to her.
Romberg
Well, out with it then.
Amya
Earlier today there was an incident at a school in California.
Romberg
Yes, well, I’m sure we have many of those-
Amya
An entire school was murdered, or at least local authorities think so.
Romberg
Think so?
Amya
It's complicated. Bonka found an alarming amount of unnatural power in the air.
Romberg
It was one of you?
Amya
Yes, unfortunetly.
Romberg
This isn’t good. Amya please tell me there is some kind of mistake.
Amya
I wish it were. Although we do not know who the source is, we know the truce has been broken.
Romberg
How do you know?
He looked at her in fear.
Amya
A drop of blood was found in the school.
Romberg
So then, this treaty you told me of when I was inaugurated, it’s true then?
Amya
Very.
Romberg
What happens next?
He sat down.
Amya
I don’t know completely.
Romberg
Don’t ease me with a lie Amya. They are coming for me, correct?
Amya.
Yes, that we know. We are already preparing to move you into safety. I’m gathering my people and we shall be ready in a week.
Romberg
Do we have that much time?
Amya
All we can do is hope.
He rolled his pencil on the desk.
Romberg
So much for peace.
Amya
With your death, so dies it.
He put the pencil in the cup on the desk.
Romberg
Where did we go wrong?
Amya
We didn’t go wrong. Evolution for your sake did.
Romberg
I did my best.
Amya
That’s all the world could ask of you.
He sat up straight.
Romberg
I’m afraid.
Amya
I know. Rest assure they will not kill you until I’m dead.
Romberg
Let's hope it does not come to that.
Amya
Be brave Nicholas, for your people, and for yourself. Before all of this, before you knew of the existence of my kind, you weren’t afraid of death.
Romberg
That was before I knew of forces greater than the likes of cancer and man made destruction. Forces that could crumble everything mankind has fought for.
Amya
We’ve always been here Nicholas, you just never opened your eyes.
Romberg
Sometimes I wish I never did. What do you think of the future?
Amya
Even that, Nicholas, is on a string.
