Arkain knocked on Suri’s door.
Suri
Come in.
He walked in.
Arkain
Hey, your door was open.
Suri
Yep, that’s why I said come in.
He walked down the hallway.
Arkain
I’m smarter then you think.
Suri
Okay, I never said you weren’t.
She walked into the kitchen and he followed.
Arkain
So.
Suri
You are just as weird as I thought you were.
Arkain
I told you-
Suri
No, no, it’s okay, I never said I didn’t like weird. Ordinary is boring.
Arkain lost himself while watching her cut carrots for dinner.
Suri
Ouch!
He came back to his senses as she cut herself with the knife. Quickly he ran over and grabbed her hand.
Arkain
Oh what happened?
Suri
I don’t know, knife slipped.
Arkain
Alrighty, let me see.
He let go of her hands and she opened her fist revealing her palm where she had just cut herself.
Arkain
I thought you said you cut yourself?
She looked down and saw her hand was not cut at all.
Suri
What? I did. Well, or at least I thought I did.
Arkain
Maybe it just didn’t cut through?
Suri
Maybe.
She finished dinner and they sat and ate.
Arkain
This is really good. Nom nom.
Suri
You’re just saying that.
Arkain
No, I mean it, I really do.
He smiled.
Suri
Thanks.
She smiled.
Arkain
No problem, gorgeous.
Suri
Oh, shut up.
Arkain
I’m just kidding, you’re not gorgeous.
Suri
How relieving. For a second there-
Arkain
You’re beautiful.
Suri
Oh, well ,Thank you.
Arkain
No, don’t tell me that, your not beautiful because I said it, you are because you are.
Suri
So cheesy I could make nachos.
Arkain
Well, do you like nachos?
Suri
Yes.
Arkain
Well then, we will be making a lot of nachos in the future. I also can do string cheese. You can call it a talent.
They laughed, this was the first time either of them has felt normal since this all began.
Suri
Thanks for coming. I needed the company.
Arkain
Well, I needed some, too.
President Nicholas Romberg sat at his desk in the oval office. In this year of 2048, the world powers are at a peace thanks to the President and his administration. After being elected sixteen years ago, he accomplished more than any of his critics thought he would. With economy thriving, wars defeated by diplomacy, and hope flowing through every nation on the earth, he has now been elected for his fourth term.
Romberg
Amya, I do not think peace will continue for much longer.
Amya sat across from him, her long blond hair flowing just past her ears, while her blue eyes glimmered in the sun that broke through the curtains on the windows.
Amya
Peace ends with dispute, and dispute is a never ending thing.
He walked to the window.
Amya
Peace is held on a string, a very thin one. The hand of a child can cut it. Never rely on it, for it can not hold you for long, nor can it hold the entire human race.
Romberg
We had such high hopes. What happened?
Amya
Humans are humans, Nicholas. The peace they all yearn for is just a mirage, and the mirage can only be viewed for so long.
Romberg
One would hope for a time they could live in that mirage.
Amya
Life is more complicated than that, why should we expect humans to be any less?
Romberg
True. If my mother could see the idealist I've become.
He opened the curtain.
Romberg
I fear there is something you want to tell me. Something more than you wish to.
She took a sip of her drink.
Amya
You’re a great man, Nicholas. Perhaps one of the best presidents I’ve ever had the chance to work with. Quite inspiring, like my days with Jefferson and Lincoln, and that I am truly grateful for. A man of your stature knows that with such high a position, comes great risk, and so, I bring you just that.
Romberg was looking out the window to the sun.
Romberg
Risk, I thought I wasn’t afraid of that word anymore.
Amya
You’ll find you never are truly unafraid of anything. Fear is a given, it’s what you do with that fear that matters.
Romberg
You always know what to say.
Amya
I’m afraid I won’t with these next words.
He turned to her.
Romberg
Well, out with it then.
Amya
Earlier today there was an incident at a school in California.
Romberg
Yes, well, I’m sure we have many of those-
Amya
An entire school was murdered, or at least local authorities think so.
Romberg
Think so?
Amya
It's complicated. Bonka found an alarming amount of unnatural power in the air.
Romberg
It was one of you?
Amya
Yes, unfortunetly.
Romberg
This isn’t good. Amya please tell me there is some kind of mistake.
Amya
I wish it were. Although we do not know who the source is, we know the truce has been broken.
Romberg
How do you know?
He looked at her in fear.
Amya
A drop of blood was found in the school.
Romberg
So then, this treaty you told me of when I was inaugurated, it’s true then?
Amya
Very.
Romberg
What happens next?
He sat down.
Amya
I don’t know completely.
Romberg
Don’t ease me with a lie Amya. They are coming for me, correct?
Amya.
Yes, that we know. We are already preparing to move you into safety. I’m gathering my people and we shall be ready in a week.
Romberg
Do we have that much time?
Amya
All we can do is hope.
He rolled his pencil on the desk.
Romberg
So much for peace.
Amya
With your death, so dies it.
He put the pencil in the cup on the desk.
Romberg
Where did we go wrong?
Amya
We didn’t go wrong. Evolution for your sake did.
Romberg
I did my best.
Amya
That’s all the world could ask of you.
He sat up straight.
Romberg
I’m afraid.
Amya
I know. Rest assure they will not kill you until I’m dead.
Romberg
Let's hope it does not come to that.
Amya
Be brave Nicholas, for your people, and for yourself. Before all of this, before you knew of the existence of my kind, you weren’t afraid of death.
Romberg
That was before I knew of forces greater than the likes of cancer and man made destruction. Forces that could crumble everything mankind has fought for.
Amya
We’ve always been here Nicholas, you just never opened your eyes.
Romberg
Sometimes I wish I never did. What do you think of the future?
Amya
Even that, Nicholas, is on a string.

are u putting all the chapters on here??
ReplyDeleteI love Suri and Arkian together they would make such a great couple, but I find it kinda weird how Suri cut herself and yet she was not hurt.
ReplyDeletealso I love the metaphor you used to describe peace, it was perfect.
cute little "date" for Suri and Arkain
ReplyDeleteAnd it is really interesting how things
are unfolding
Suri seems so boss.out of the "good guys",she's my favorite.haha,Arkain is a dork but in cute way.oh and President Nicolas?sounds familiar.i didn't notice that until now :)
ReplyDeleteWow ok, so arkain's a total cheeseball. But even a cheeseball needs a little action, I suppose.
ReplyDeleteHmm, and the President...totally making me think of our own Mr. Obama. Hopefully we can look forward to a similar period of peace with him in office, just with a happier ending. Rombergs future looks a little ominous. I also really liked Amya's line about fear, and that it's what you do with it that matters. You can either use it to challenge and better yourself, or use it against others FOR yourself.
"So cheesy I could make nachos." HAHAHA. =D
ReplyDeleteRomberg, i wish a president like that in any country will emerge successful someday. amya, i just noticed she's a girl. WOW i'm slow.
Great humor LOL, good chapter, keep at it!
ReplyDeleteI really like how you bounced back into the real world. And how you showed us that the kind of people that are Amya and Amros and Hayden and connected with the humans. Im excited to see what happens next.
ReplyDeleteOooh Amya was around when Jefferson and Lincoln were :) Nice! I want to know more! hahaha Suri and Arkain are cute. Their whole "cheesy" conversation made me laugh! And I am so intrigued about Suri and her "cut"
ReplyDeleteI loves the thing about things being on a string.
ReplyDeleteTotally true.
The future it changes constantly.
I like the thing with Suri and Arkain. Every superhero/superhero-like person needs someone like that.
I like how you compared the frailty of peace
ReplyDeleteto a thin string nice metaphor
I like Arkain, but I just wish the hero would not always be a "geek". I would love for the hero for once outsmart everyone more powerful than him, including those much older and "wiser" (the ones in charge). Oh well, guess that's another story........
ReplyDelete"So cheesy I could make nachos". Classic!
And President Nicholas = LMAO! Did he used to sing and play guitar, too??? This is too much fun!
i really like the conversation amya and nicholas have. it's really informative and its not like, "wait i have to go back to understand it" it's really good.
ReplyDeleteArkain is such a sweetheart :) I think it often comes off as cheesy, but we all know he was being sincere! I love how you transitioned from a playful dinner date (and maybe revealing Arkain's power??? we shall see!) to a very deep and intense conversation about the world and how fragile everything really. I also loved the peace metaphor! So true...
ReplyDelete"Well then, we will be making a lot of nachos in the future"
ReplyDeletethat is so cute.
government is involved too? interesting. i like how this is all coming together.
Haha do you like nachos..i do i do!!...
ReplyDeleteI like how Arkain can be at ease even for a bit cuz who knows when he'll get to be like that again...and i like how Amya says that Fear is a given, it’s what you do with that fear that matters..very true!!
i like that every chapter actually has conflict and an addition to the plot instead of jus mediocre fillers some authors use. good job :)
ReplyDeletebut arkain is sooooo cheesy why does it seem like uve said those lines to a girl before.lol
wow arkain way too cheesy haha
ReplyDeleteoverall this chapter is really good. i like the discussion between Amya and Romberg
i can definately agree with @nickkfair!
ReplyDeletei like how every chapter contributes to the story's plot and conflict. i cant wait
for the next chapter!
very good!
ReplyDeleteand @nickfair i think that arkains cheesyness is very cute! and most guys are cheesy on a first date and i think it really works for arkain

ReplyDeletelove this chapter
ReplyDeletei loved how u believe amya is someone maybe working along side with this president
and then she says he was her favorite so far
so im like how old are u lady
how many cud u possibly kno
then she threw lincoln and jefferson out
>.>
i was like whoooaaa..i frigging love it man
and the whole society is on a string thing
i love the depth within the words that are said
it kinda gives u insight into the author and maybe he as well is a person of great depth mmmm steven :)
but one of my favorite chapters so far...probably is my fav
oh yea and the cutting scene with suri
it makes me think oh crap was it arkain's touch that healed her
like it makes u wonder what is HIS purpose
who is he
and what is his power
he has to be a major player in the game
you kno "the one"
i forgot to menton but i love how no one really knows amros power
u get the idea that he is just so powerful that even we cant fathom it
I like the string analogy for peace, I also enjoyed the scene with the president, I think the dialogue in it was well written.
ReplyDeleteMuch more natural dialogue between Arkain and Suri. Amya intrigues me and the string metaphor works very well.
ReplyDelete..arakin is so corny. hahahhaha <3 its a very natural dialogue between arkain and suri, but ehh as funny as it is, its a bit too, heh, 'cheesy' for my taste. but still very good, it reflects on the relationship developing between the two and personalities.
ReplyDeleteAmya is a very curious character, greeat metaphor for the chapter.
I like that the cast continues to expand; it gives things a more epic feel, especially when the President is involved.
ReplyDeleteAmazing chapter haha. New characters. I like Amya. I'm hoping Suri and Arkain have sex sometime soon. >_>
ReplyDeleteNew characters for the win. And yes.. I'd have to agree with AlexxZontzz actually haha. I can see a relationship forming between Arkain and Suri xD
ReplyDeleteThe dialogue between Suri and Arkain was soooo cheesy. lol That's cool how the immortals of whoever they are, have been apart of the human ruling class an higher parts of government for decades. Very interesting!
ReplyDeleteDitto on the above comments regarding the Arkain-Suri dialogue :p the jokes were a little corny but they have good chemistry. To me this Romberg guy is rather straightforward for a president, and based on the dialogue he is either an informed human or a puppet of the White Coats. Probably both. Let's hope this president is a little more fleshed out as we go along in the story. Like where the story is going.
ReplyDeleteAlready commented on this one, but I'd like to speculate that Amya was extremely frustrated during the Bush administration lol
ReplyDeleteromberg 2012, even tho hes prolly like 20 right now and knows nothing
ReplyDeleteAmya worked with Lincoln and Jefferson! I love your story telling such a great imagination! Ahhhh amore..... Love where your taking Arkain and suri!
ReplyDeleteIt is nice to see that Arkain and Suri had a moment that is synonymous with childhood, flirting with another person. I think for once they were able to just be children, in a sense, in a world that is slowly crumbling to its demise, irony at its best.
ReplyDeleteWhat a way to break the news to someone that they are in grave danger and their head is being hunted for. Amya is definitely not someone that is going to sugarcoat any information for anyone. Curious to find out more about her and get to know who she really is.
"this was the first time either of them has felt normal since this all began."
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely shipping Arkain and Suri for this reason. I love that they're able to make each other feel normal and at ease for once - and I think this is especially important to Suri. She probably hasn't felt like that in her whole life.
I really liked the introduction of Amya's character and the way that you revealed her identity. Like I've said before, really enjoy your writing style :)
